The boat
What exactly is a dahabiya?+
A dahabiya is a traditional wooden boat used to cruise the Nile. The word means "gold" in Arabic. Fleur carries up to fourteen guests in seven cabins. Two are suites with a private terrace and five are standard doubles.
How is this different from a Nile cruise ship?+
A cruise ship carries 150 to 300 people, needs deep water and a built dock, and follows a fixed schedule alongside a dozen identical boats. Fleur carries fourteen and draws little enough water to moor at Gebel el Silsila and Ramady Island, where there is no dock at all.
How many cabins are there?+
Seven. Two suites with a king bed and a private terrace at water level, and five standard doubles with a king bed or twins. You choose when you book. Every cabin has an en-suite bathroom, individually controlled air conditioning, WiFi and a window on the river.
Can we charter the whole boat?+
Often, yes, and with seven cabins one family or one group of friends fills comfortably. The route stays the same but timings can flex around you. Send us your group size and dates and we will quote the charter.
The voyage
How long is the cruise?+
Four nights from Luxor to Aswan, leaving on Saturdays. Three nights from Aswan to Luxor, leaving on Wednesdays.
Do you really sail into Luxor, or stop at Esna?+
We go through the Esna Lock and arrive in Luxor by water. Most dahabiyas on this river end at Esna and put their guests in a minibus for the last hour. It costs us time and it is the single thing returning guests mention most.
When is the season?+
October through May. Through the summer the boat comes out of the water for maintenance, so there are no departures between June and September.
What is the weather like?+
October and April to May are warm. High twenties to mid thirties Celsius. December and January are mild by day, around 20 to 23, and genuinely cold after dark on deck, so bring a jumper and a jacket. Rain is close to unheard of.
Booking
How do I book?+
Check availability on the website, choose your cabins and send a booking request. That is a request, not a payment. We confirm the cabins are free and come back to you with confirmation and payment details. Nothing is charged until you have heard from a person.
What is included in the rate?+
Full board. Every meal cooked on board, tea and coffee through the day, guided temple visits with a licensed Egyptologist, all entrance fees on the itinerary, and transfers between the boat and each site.
What is not included?+
Flights, your Egyptian visa, alcoholic drinks and personal expenses, and anything not listed in the programme. Gratuities for the guide and the crew are already included in the rate, so there is nothing to work out at the end.
Are rates per person or per cabin?+
Per cabin, in euros, for the whole voyage. The rate changes with the season. The website shows the correct price for the dates you pick.
Do you take children?+
Yes. Children aged 6 to 12 sharing with parents receive a 10% reduction. The suites can take two adults and one child; the standard doubles cannot fit three. Tell us the ages when you enquire and we will work out the best cabin arrangement.
Practical
What should I pack?+
Light cotton clothing, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sun cream. Comfortable shoes for temple floors, which are uneven. Something with sleeves and longer trousers or a skirt for visiting sites. Not required, but it makes the day easier. A warm layer for winter evenings on deck. Dress on board is entirely informal.
Can you cater for dietary needs?+
Vegetarian and dairy-free are routine. Allergies, gluten-free and anything else are fine too. Tell us when you book so the shopping is done before you arrive. With one kitchen and fourteen guests it is a conversation with the cook, not a special-request form.
What are the check-in and check-out times?+
Check-in is 12:00 and check-out is 08:00. Our team arranges transfers at both ends so arrival and departure are straightforward.
Is the cruise safe?+
Yes. The crew is professionally trained, there are life jackets for every guest and fire extinguishers on both decks, and we follow Egyptian maritime and health safety standards throughout the voyage.
